Walking in the Light

Introduction

A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Understanding our Identity as Lights

Jesus doesn't say that we might be lights or that we should try to be lights; He declares that we are the light of the world. This is not just a command but an affirmation of our identity in Christ. When we accepted Jesus as our Savior, we were transformed, filled with His light, and called to reflect that light to the world. But what does it mean to be a light? Light has two primary functions: it reveals and it guides. As lights of Christ, we reveal His truth and love to a world that desperately needs it, and we guide others toward the hope and salvation found in Him.

The Purpose of our Light

Jesus' command to let our light shine is not for our own glory but for the glory of God. When people see the light of Christ in us—through our actions, words, and love—they are drawn not to us, but to Him. Our lives become testimonies of God's grace and power. In Philippians 2:15, Paul urges us to "shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life." This means that our lives should stand out in the darkness of the world, radiating the hope and truth found in the Gospel. Whether at work, in our families, or in our communities, we are to shine in a way that others cannot ignore.

Conclusion

As we go forth this week, let us remember that we are not merely carrying a light—we are the light of the world, because Christ lives in us. In every interaction, every challenge, and every opportunity, let us shine brightly, pointing others to the One who is the true light of the world.

Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the light of Christ that shines within us. Help us to live boldly as lights in this world, reflecting Your love, truth, and grace in everything we do. When the darkness surrounds us, give us courage and strength to shine even brighter for Your glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
